Boston area TFL Meet Up - Parking

Meeting room location:   The main entrance to Cary Library is on Mass Ave.  A rear entrance is down a level, behind the building.   Our meeting room is on the lower level, to the left as you walk in the rear entrance.

Parking :   The small lot behind Cary Library is often full on Saturdays.   There are a couple 15 minute parking spaces right next to the lower level entrance, where you can stop to drop off your stuff, and then find longer term parking.     Two public lots in Lexington Center are within a block or two of the  library.   There is also on street parking.    All of this is metered at 25c per hour, quarters only - two hours max.  Meters can be refilled after the two hours are up.   You can also park on street in the residential neighborhoods behind the library with no meters.   Any questions, please let me know.

A local reporter and/or photographer from the Lexington Minuteman may stop by sometime in the afternoon.  See you tomorrow.

-------------------------------------------------------------

The list of attendees keeps shifting as some are unable to come and others decide they can.    Sorry that some who had hoped to attend will be unable to do so.    It looks like we'll have around 15 people attending, give or take last minutes changes.    It's almost time to start baking.

Just to get us geared up for our get-together Yozza sent me this link to an earlier TFL real life meet-up.    Of course ours won't involve a WFO or baking 28 loaves of bread at a time, but it will still be epic!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our Boston area TFL get together is coming up soon - on March 30 from 1-4:30 at Cary Memorial Library 1874 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, Massachusetts.   Looking forward to meeting everybody.   We have plenty of room for more attendees, so if you have been thinking about coming but haven't responded please let me know.    If you want to come but have an issue with getting there, also let me know.    Other issues?

If you want...

*  Bring something a little out of the ordinary that you use for making bread.   We'll set up our objects/ingredients/whatever on a table for browsing.

*  Bring some of your starter to exchange.

*  Be prepared to say a few words about  how you made your bread (hopefully accompanied by recipe copies to hand out.)

Things to Bring

* Your bread (of course) and accompaniments

* Cutting boards and knives - the more the merrier

* Plates, knives, forks, spoons, cups, napkins - Varda

Obviously, and sadly,  I won't be able to attend, but best of luck with your organization and the eventual get-together! It's not an easy job to organize, but it'll be all worth it.  :)

I'm in also. The Park Lane Seaport apartments has a function room that might be a good spot.

So far 6 people have expressed interest.   Let's see if we get a few more in the next day or two, and then we can choose a place depending on number of people, cost and location (based on where people are coming from.)   Seaport is a great idea (and more fun than a function room in Burlington, say)  so we'll have to see if it works based on those criteria.

Those of you from the area who are interested but haven't responded - this is not a commitment.  Comment so we can take your needs into consideration moving forward.

I would love to be able to go if my schedule permits.  I'm in NY but would try and see if I can take a weekend excursion to join the fun.  Once you have the details let me know and I will see if I can join in.

At the moment, all of those work for me. Aliens may invade, though, so your never know...

Ditto to loydb -- they all work for me right now

Any of those dates work for me. Email me at bsmith@bostonphoto.com if I can help.

Bill,   Thanks so much for offering to help.   I messaged you asking if you could price a small room at Seaport.   Right now, 4 of the 5 dates are good for everyone who has answered.   So we still have March 9, 16, 23, 30.   -Varda

Hi:  I'm not in the Boston area (love to do something like this in Philly this summer), but...

several of the local large supermarkets (ones with takeout restaurants inside) have community rooms...given that you are a food-related group, they may be delighted to have you!

Our local library also has a community room.  They may want the event to be open  to the public, but that might generate more potential TFL-ers :-)

Have fun!  I'm looking forward to hearing how it works out.

March 30 works for me. I had earlier put in a comment about my interest but doesn't seem to have shown up.

I'm good with either March 23 or the 30th.

Thanks for asking me, Varda, I didn't think about it before, but it would be really nice to meet with you (obviously) lovely people in real time.

It would be great if everyone who is going to attend can start thinking about which bread(s) they would like to bake and post it here so we have the biggest variety possible.  I am already losing sleep thinking about which breads to make!

Look forward to seeing everyone.

Tossing around in your bed, haunted by images of loaves....I'm deeply concerned!

But, actually, I was thinking of what I could bring, too - it should be nothing that gets soft or stales fast, since we can't bake the same day.

Karin

Well....usually when I come back from a trip overseas it takes me a few weeks to return to normal restless sleep!  Now, I alternate between work anxiety and bread anxiety!

Agreed, we don't want to all serve stale bread to each other....it's one thing when we can only see it but now our breads need to pass the taste test!  I bake almost exclusively levain breads so I'm not too worried about the stale part.  If anything many times my bread tastes better the second day anyway. With your fine selection of breads to choose from I'm sure we will be happy with any one of them :)

What is the food policy of the library? Can I brink a crockpot full of pulled pork? All bread and no pig makes Jack a dull boy, or something like that.

I'm probably going to do Mohn Bars from ITJB. If I can bring the pulled pork, I'll make a bunch of blue corn tortillas as well.

Mukoseev's picture

I bake a lot of rye bread, almost exclusively, so I thought I'd  bring some ryes and some home made pastrami and new pickles.

I'll volunteer for clean up crew.  I'll bring some large heavy duty contractor trash bags, fill them and haul them away.

There is nothing better than Pastrami on Rye and pickles!  Can't wait to try yours.

I am always interested in meeting others who love to cook, bake and eat!!!  Not sure what I will bring but it will be a vegetarian dish and of course, a bread and/or baked goodie.

All I see is a few pleasant little flurrries   ;-)    Hunkered down here too.   Fire going, bread in progress, not going anywhere.   Just hoping no branches hit the roof.

Yeah... we were supposed have family visit us next week flying out of Logan tomorrow afternoon.  Probably not going to happen. ;^)

Hunker down and stay safe, everyone!

We had about 20" of snow...I don't have the strength to bend down and scoop up some to see if your idea would work :).

Curious if Lexington is most centrally located and convenient for majority of those who are attending?

varda's picture
varda

Dobeda,   Earlier during organizing this, I asked people where they would prefer to hold it, and also for help looking for a site.   I did get some help looking for locations in city of Boston, none of which come through.   No one else responded about location, so I found a site local to me.   I do not have the time to check places out at any distance, and the site I found is free, large, very well kept and attractive, and allows us to bring our own food.    As to your question I don't know where everyone comes from but the list includes Boston, Foxboro, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Long Island.   So people are coming from all over.   Lexington is right on Rte 95 so relatively easy to get to from many locations.   There is also public transportation from Boston into Lexington Center.  Glad you are planning to attend.   Where are you from?  -Varda

I'm coming up from the Cape about an hour and a half.  Lexington is fine with me.

I can't come, either, my daughter has some days off to go on a mother-daughter trip during spring break, so we are headed to Canada.

Very sorry,

I will bring, most likely my Roasted corn with Feta Loaf and My Guacamole bread....I reserve the right to change my crazy mind though!  I will also bring some cheese and olive oil and cutting boards and my bread knife.

For ideas of what else to do, one idea could be for everyone to bring a sample of their starters and we could do a starter swap if anyone was interested.  Just a thought.

Would love to come. I will be teaching until 1 pm in Boston - is it OK to come late? I would bring Hot Cross Buns since it's almost Easter! If I have the time also a Vollkornbrot.

Great idea! Thanks,
