Proof of starter

Not the prettiest loaf I've ever made but proof that my new starter is indeed alive.

In other news, I just can't wrap my head around it being Thanksgiving here in Canada Monday.  It feels too early in the season for pumpkin pie and turkey.  I think we're going to have a mini-Thanksgiving with some friends here Monday and then celebrate again with family members from the states six weeks from now.  Will I bake?  We shall see.

Hi Floyd,

Great to see a fresh starter anchoring your baking life in B.C.  Will you bake?  Is that any way to bait an audience? We shall see...,

Ha!  It wasn't meant as a teaser, it genuinely was a "I haven't thought that far ahead yet" comment.

The starter has been refreshed, so some baking does indeed appear to be in my not-too-distant future. :)

Very nice looking ciabatta (I hope that is what you intended :))

I am sure you will find the inspiration to wow your guests with some freshly baked bread and cake!

It wasn't quite intended to be a ciabatta, but that is indeed what it ended up like.  Still, it rose!

Years ago when I spent a year in Canada I recall how odd that Thanksgiving was too.  How much we are tied into the traditions we were raised with.  Your kids will soon forget Thanksgivings on Thursdays and having been in November as they are being raised in a new place and time.  Kids always adapt quickly - less stuck in their ways and eager to just live it all :-)

Nice to know your starter is in good shape.  I have found that these sd starters are quite hardy.  Probably hardier than their 'owners' are.  I have certainly learned that it is my starter that is 'shaping' me....telling me what it needs etc. in order for it to provide bread for me to bake with.  Luckily mine is not too demanding.

Happy Thanksgiving :-)

Thanks, Janet.

I just refreshed it and my starter is looking pretty robust too, which is good.  I don't think I'd have the energy right now to nurse a "delicate flower."

Happy Thanksgiving Floyd to you and yours! Lucky guy that you are getting to have two Turkey Days, makes me a little envious. :^)

may not be a such a blessing as you and I think Franko.

The US State Department is very cautious right now after the Benghazi attack on our consulate.  They are especially worried, now that Syria has started shelling Turkey and Turkey being our NATO ally is responding in an like manner, the US might be drawn into another ground war in the Middle East.   This time with a NATO partner that is already mad at the US as it is and also has a tenuous hold on the once moderate politics of their country.

So, to keep the Turkish military less aggressive, deflate and tone down the new conflict. make every day Turks like the USA better and to thwart any possible symbolic propaganda used by America's enemies,  that America is celebrating again as they do every year, by eating Turkey - for breakfast, lunch and dinner for nearly a week,  the State Department is considering banning the use of Turkey Day and changing the slang name of this potentially explosive US  holiday.  The new name being considered is; 'Really Big Chicken Day' to play it safe adn be more politically correct.   Then there would only be one non PC correct Turkey Day for Floyd cto elebrate or worry about as the case may be.

The hallmark of a great solution is where everyone wins except the really big chicken.

Thankfully for Floyd, it is totally untrue that Floyd's Fabulous Sweet Potato Rolls for Turkey Day will also be affected by the ban.   Now that he is in Canada the rolls are OK there and can even be legally imported into the USA so long as he declares them at the border as potential international threats to peace  :-)

Satire warning is over but remember the very old Jewish saying - there can be no love without humor.

Nice baking Floyd.
