Formatting change on this site

Today when I checked in here there was a change at the bottom of each post.  A box containing 3 options that require checking....

I used to automatically get emails notifying me when people posted comments on topics that I had commented on too.

I am not sure that is happening automatically today as I have gotten  no emails which is uncommon these days...

It was all auto. before so I am not sure which box I should check in order to recieve emails again as I was before....

Anyone know which box is the one I am after?

Anyone else getting the new formatting?   If so, can you explain what each selection means?

Any help is appreciated :-)

The Subscribe section has been there for a long time.  If you haven't been using it, don't worry about it.

The scheduled job that sends out notifications is failing.  I am trying to figure out why, but it is not a trivial thing to figure out. Hopefully I have it back in action later this evening.

Hi Floyd,
I do not envy you your job this evening….

Thanks for the response. Tis glad to know it isn't my computer doing odd things.

I have never gotten the 'subscribe' section being in a box before. THink it ran horizontally across the bottom of the post and it was all automatic. I just started getting emails and figured that was the norm…ignorance - so much to learn.

Good luck sorting things out.

Janet

To try to respond directly to your question, no I don't see anything different at all. (I wouldn't be surprised to hear that it had changed a little for some other web browsers though. I'm using Firefox 3.6 under CentOS.)

Now a more roundabout (but also hopfefully more helpful) response: The three little boxes have always existed. Although you can check them, you don't ever need to. The way automatic email notification really works is it checks some of these boxes for you without your ever being aware of it. (You can uncheck the boxes too, thus overriding the automatic settings  ...but you probably don't want to.)

It sounds to me like the little boxes (probably behind the word "Subscribe") have for some reason moved for you from the end of each original post (where they were so inconspicuous you probably never noticed them) to the end of the whole thread. I wouldn't expect any change in behavior  ...but then again I'm not Floyd and so don't really know:-) You shouldn't have to ever check or uncheck any of the boxes at all, instead doing everything through the "auto notify" settings in your profile, so it shouldn't really matter just how confusingly they are worded.

(As I remember it, you have a relatively unusual browser-and-OS combination, and so you're likely to see problems even when nobody else does if there was some internal tinkering and everything wasn't put back perfectly.)

Thanks for the response Chuck. Your explanation of the choices I have were helpful dispute the fact that they aren't working right now :-)

This past year has had my head spinning trying to pick up the basics of bread baking….I guess now is the time for learning about the specifics of how this site operates :-) My brain can only process so much new info at a time or else it will explode! Now I know something about this site that I hadn't known before.
Thanks Again,
Janet

Fingers crossed, I think it is fixed and messages should be delivered as they are supposed to be going forward.

Yes, it's fixed. All the notification mails just flooded in. :p

Thank you Floyd for your dedicated hard work, as always. :)

My mail box is full this morning too FLoyd.

THank you for all the time and effort you put in to keeping this site up and running. I soooo appreciate it. Makes my life so much easier coming here and learning from all the gifted bakers who post their work.

My family and my neighbors have all benefited from the work you have done and continue to do. In fact, this morning I am baking the formula you posted - Wild Rice and Onion Bread. A good fall treat that I am going to make into rolls and give to the employees at our local Ace Hardware store - they save my life on a regular basis :-). (We live in an older house that needs a lot of TLC )

It's me again Floyd. I am not getting emails again today and when I type comments here or in my message area I get a yellow box without all the items displayed across the top allowing me to check spelling, number items, insert photos etc…

Beneath the box there is another box titled 'Input Format' the first choice is checked = Filtered HTML….

Is it the site or is it my computer?

Thanks for your help!

If you check the times on the comments, you can see a big gap until about 3 hours ago. I'm glad to see it back up although it is coming in a bit patchy and slow. These things can happen and we just have to wait them out. The site has gotten so large, I'm sure it's not easy keeping up.

Thanks Mini - I hadn't seen that it was down and just got on now. I am pretty ignorant about computer stuff and never know if it is mine or 'out there'.

I can't imagine what Floyd has to do….I am clueless - totally!!!

I appreciate you keeping me up to date :-)

now. Might have something to do with my computer trying to route directions using old "stuff." Click on safari and go down to empty cache and click on it. Then close safari and reload it. Now my pictures are coming in.

Spoke too soon... having trouble with the long threads. can't get 2nd or 3 pages. Well some of those long threads will just have to wait.

Hi Mini,

Yes, Mini is correct that the server for all intents and purposes was out of commission for 10-12 hours last night.  I'm not certain what the culprit is and am trying to keep an eye on the box today.  The only significant change I've made lately is to have the RAM in the box doubled, but that should improve performance, not deteriorate it.

Thank you all for your patience while I work through these issues.

Noticed it was offline when I attempted to log in this morning.

While I can bring up the front page with Chrome (version 14.0.835.202 m), I get a white screen when trying to open any thread. All it says at the bottom is "waiting for www.thefreshloaf.com" Tried refreshing about three times to no avail.

Am writing this using Firefox - but the site was slow to load, as it is using my iPad2.

Hopefully this will be of some help.

No wonder I was having a hard time spotting what was wrong inside my server: we were hitting the 10mbps cap on the network port, so the problem was outside of the box, not in it.  That'll teach me to think inside the box.

(groan)

They just upgraded it to 100mbps and now things are much snappier. It appears there is a backlog of email messages waiting to be delivered though, so if you suddenly get a flood of mail that has been waiting in the queue, my apologies!

Floyd,

This all reads like a foreign language to me but I do understand that things are back to 'normal' once again :-)

Thanks for understanding all of this and keeping this site up and running...My sanity depends on it :*)

The good news is the server is back in shape and runing snappy.  The bad news is that the backlog of failed messages was ENORMOUS, including many that appear to be duplicates.  They were the same message that the site attempted deliver many times over the past week or so.  I am doing everything I can to clear them out and prevent further past messages from being sent!

Duplicate message is better than no message. ;p

Thank you so much for all your hard works to keep this site running for us, always.

best wishes,
