Boxed cake frosting question--long ago product search
Does anybody remember a boxed cake frosting mix that used to come in a blue box? It needed to be cooked and made a frosting that stayed "tacky" on the surface. It was sold on grocery shelves up until the late 1960's or early 1970's. It may have been made by Royal (gelatin) company.
I'm trying to recreate that frosting for a friend who remembers making a special Mother's Day coconut cake for her mother with it. If anybody can recall the type of frosting it was, perhaps I could then find a recipe for it.

I believe you could be talking about a frosting that is called 'Seven Minute Frosting' it's a lovely shiny frosting, kind of marshmellowie meringueish and can be easily made. It's a cooked frosting and can be made in a double broiler...you can find a few recipes for it on the Foodnetwork...Paula Deen has one rated four stars another rated 5 stars..both sound good...but I'm sure there are lots of recipes you can google up for it...I think I remember those tiny little blue boxes of frosting your talking about..they were a quick mix for this 'seven minute frosting'..I think!

If you google Jiffy frosting 1960 and check out the old packaging you may recognize it. Sounds like what you're describing. I agree with Sylvia, 7-minute frosting suggestion.
I remember a prank once, covered a cake tin with shaving cream and kept the guest of honor upwind when presenting "the cake." It was this white frosting we were emulating. She had answered many questions we had about this frosting without seeing what we were up to. When she saw the cake and all that fluffy white coming her way (we knew her well and she could out-bake any and all of us blindfolded) the first thing she did with eyes big and smiling with childish delight, was to take a big swipe of "frosting" with her finger and pop it into her mouth. The shock on her face was the best! And yes, we did have the real cake hiding around the corner.

I remember now, it was called Jiffy!...I recall thinking it was such a small box to make frosting to cover a cake..I tried it a couple of times, it wasn't to bad at all, though I wasn't much of label reader back in those days, I have to think it was probably powdered egg whites and glucose, sugar, ?...good old 60's days...I think it was probably better tasting the ones today in the paper cans, I don't like them at all, but I'm sure they are a favorite of many consumers.

I went to Jiffy's website and they still sell a white and a chocolate cake frosting, but not this type with the egg whites. It was indeed a different era when it came to baking--I recall my dad LOVING Wonder Bread's texture and raving about how it toasted. He was born in 1898 so I guess even sliced bread, let alone featherweight sliced bread, was a thing of beauty to him.
I used to make mud-pies in the back yard (must have been a forerunner of my bread-baking...) and I recall one choice batch I whipped up with some greenish-brackish mud I found from somewhere in the yard. It made such a pretty mud-pie that I couldn't resist urging a little friend to taste it. I think she threw up and ran home crying her eyes out that I poisoned her. I'm glad to say my breads don't have the same reaction. I was soundly paddled for the whole affair too.

Yeppers that was my first thought too....7 minute jiffy frosting mix. I looked for some not too long ago and couldn't find it.

Thank you for sharing the recipe link. I'll give it a try. I recall learning to make this kind of frosting in junior high school cooking class (from scratch, not a boxed mix) and I think it was called "boiled" frosting. It wasn't one of my favorites, but my friend (and others) do like it, so I'm game to make it for them.

The boxed icing you are looking for is called Dream Whip it came out in 1957 and was used on almost all cakes around my grandma and my mama's house.
