is the Bosch Compact really bad for single loaves?

I have been reading conflicting reports about how the Bosch units as well as some other brands really aren't good at kneading just one loaf between 700-1000 g.   Is this true and if so what are good options for folks who will only ever make one load at a time?

I think you are confusing the Bosch compact stand mixer with the Bosch Universal.  Two completely different machines.

The Bosch Compact does a terrific job with small quantities.

The Bosch Universal is $500.  The Bosch Compact is now $170 (was $150 last week).  Both available through Pleasant Hill Grain.

any idea why the price went up $20?

That could be a reason.  Or the cost of materials has increased.   Cost of transport certainly has gone up (I checked mine and it was made in Slovenia).

Why not ask Pleasant Hill Grain?  They have wonderful customer service.

BTW, that $170 price is actually pretty good.  I saw a couple on Amazon today for close to $300.

That's not how economics really work.  But thanks for the answer.

In this case, I think that's exactly what's going on here. The Compact, for whatever reason, seems to go from periods of being highly available(at a very modest price), to limited availability(at higher prices), to barely being available at all, at least here in the US.

For a while, the Compact had a status in the US of "Discontinued", and was essentially not for sale retail. Then a maybe a little over a year ago(give or take), evidently Bosch or whoever, and again for whatever reason, supplied another lot(s) for the US market.

Looks like we are headed back to a period of "discontinued", where availability will be limited, and prices high or spotty.

That's just my take of what is possibly going on. It makes sense really, as while the Bosch machines are highly regarded, seemingly top rated machines, they are not like they can sell by the millions whatever the make. Guess no one wants to get stuck with a warehouse full of them and not be able to sell them. They seem to have chosen a somewhat unique model of distribution here in the US.

Discontinued??  Not at all.   The Bosch compact stand mixer is back in production.  That's very clearly stated at Pleasant Hill Grain, who distributes Bosch products.

I personally don't think $170 is a "high" price for a quality stand mixer that can outperform other mixers that sell for twice the price.  That price includes shipping.

Just because the price of a product increases doesn't mean it's discontinued or hard to find.

I tried to frame my post in the context of "possibility", and "my take". Not as a statement of fact.

Maybe you missed that.

Use compact almost daily for single loaves of bread.  Works great and when they were unavailabe for a while, I bought an extra to have if my first one ever broke.
