Selectively turn off all but 'New' posts?

It would be handy to have a switch that would suppress all but the subject, date, and poster for posts that have already been read. You already keep track of this with the 'New' marker, but suppressing the body of the previously seen post would make it easier to find the new ones. The switch is important to be able to read the post in context, if needed.

Also, on the subject of 'New', it appears that if I look for posts on the second page of a thread, all the posts are marked as not-new, so the functionality is lost except for the first page.

I hope these suggestions aren't too difficult to implement, and perhaps you already are working on them.

thanks for the suggestion.

You may be able to accomplish *some* of that with existing viewing options, choosing to show newest to oldest or "in the order they were made"  and you can get some of that by choosing the "collapsed" options rather than expanded version under "Comment viewing options". It would be nice if it pointed out exactly which of the comments are new though, particularly on the big long thread posts - I don't think the code base we have to work with right now does this.

We've got a lot on our plates in the next couple of weeks so all major redesign and User Interface work will likely be put on a backburner until (hopefully) later this summer when we would like to do a site refresh, but we'll keep an eye out for code modules that may exist that can be dropped in to accomplish this - just not sure how much time we'll have for searching this out right now.

(For the moment, the main focus is just security and performance maintenance until the schedule allows for more time.)

I recognize this should be a low priority item, but it would be nice to have (especially the 2nd page problem).

If you want to see an example of the abbreviated post feature, look at www.chowhound.com They do a nice job of it, but I'm sure you get the gist of the feature without an example.

My hat's off to you both for creating and maintaining an informative and welcoming site. Go ahead, have another one of Norm's Krakow bagels. Please, do.

haha - yeah, but that's a "CBS Interactive" website - they actually have a full paid staff whose day-job is to write all the code for their websites ;) Pretty sure that Moneywatch and CNet and Gamespot etc have some good staff to put to the task.

Still...duley noted. We'll see if we find anything to enable this. If anyone has drupal modules written that would enable this, drop Floyd a line ;)

Really I am. I do indeed lose all 'New' markers when I try to read a multi-page thread. It's impossible to follow a thread like dmsnyders recent post on Norm's Breads. Even when I see a 'recent' post in the home page, and I click on the post, it takes me to the top of the page with David's original post and no indication as to what is the most recent addition. Do you think there could be something on my end that could possibly cause this? I'm running IE8, with TFL expanded threaded options set. It's really quite frustrating.

As to Chowhound, it was quite good long before they sold to CBS, but I think they did have at least some full time paid staff from early on. I think the navigation tools (quick in and out) are more important than any formatting tools, if that's any help.

Thanks for building a site and a community that is supportive and informative. My complaints are made in the spirit of constructive criticism from a TFL advocate.

I hope you can help me figure out why the links on the home page don't always work. Here are two cases that behave differently. I am running IE8, and now that I have turned on Error reporting, I see that many but not all pages from TFL show the message 'Error on Page', and fail to take me to the right comment in a thread. I hope that by having a page that works and a page that fails you'll be able to find the problem.

Thanks,
Stewart

This works. It jumps to the comment that I clicked on, and displays the middle of the thread, on a recent page of the thread:
http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/18619/nybakersnorm039s-book-recipe-tests-continuation-1#comment-125680

This doesn't. Instead of jumping to the comment, it jumps to the original thread entry, top of page 1, ignoring the comment parameter:
