Hello World!

Hey everybody,

I am kind of a noob at bread baking, but like everybody else here I have a passion for baking... and eating bread! Just wanted to say hello to everybody and ask some questions that will help get me off...

Does anybody know where I might find a reliable source for flours in SoFla, my grocery stores only carry small bags of flours and few varieties at that, I can often burn through a bag in a day!

What about advice for developing one's own formulae for bread using baker's percentages? Some formulas that could be easily varied would be extremely helpful!

Thanks everybody!

Hi, J_R.

Welcome to TFL!

I can't help you with SoFla stores, but there are lots of online sources including King Arthur Flour, nybakers.com, Bob's Red Mill, and many others.

If you are new to bread baking, the best path is to choose a small number of proven formulas for breads of the type you like and master them through many bakes. Then, when you really know how to make these and understand how variations in ingredients and techniques change the product, you can make adjustments to achieve new breads with a better chance of getting the results you want.

Happy baking!

David

And if you sign up for King Arthur Flour's email list they will occasionally send you emails with coupons for free shipping.  However, if you have a Walmart Superstore nearby, they often carry KAF even cheaper than from KAF.  Only 5 lb bags though.

Welcome JR!! I too am in South Florida! I WAS able to buy Eagle Mills flour in 2 10lb bags at Costco, but now they only carry flour in 50 pound bags!! A little much for me because I am STILL working full time! BUT...I am heading to BJs tomorrow so I will be happy to let you know what they have. Are you on the east or west coast?? WalMart is a good place for KAF but personally I hate to feed the WM beast!! Anyway, again, WELCOME!! You are gonna LOVE it here!!

I am a west coaster and live kind of close to a BJ's so that would be super! I too dislike feeding the WM beast.

Thanks

Well, FORTUNATELY I am off tomorrow so that is HIGH on my list of "TO DO'S"!! If I get there before you, I will post my findings and hope you will do the same for me!! I am on the East side of Florida not too many miles out of Miami. So...PLEASE let me know what you find and I will let you know the same. BTW....I buy my yeast at BJs because you get 2 pounds for less than $4!!! I just put some in a plastic Ball jar and put the rest in the freezer! Anyway, do let me know what you find if you don't mind! Thanks SO much!!

Sorry, I am an east coaster. Jeez! I have to get my facts straight. Not too far out of Miami as well. That's a great deal at BJ's!
