Looking at those cartoons reminds me of Alton Brown's comment about a sourdough culture: We take care of it, feed it, then kill it and eat it.
And we don't just kill starter; we build it up and then slaughter yeast and bacteria by the millions. We're all horrible people and I fully expect to be sent to yeast hell.
