Baking myself through life :-)

Hi Everyone,

I'm happy to have joined this site. For many years I have been a hobby cook and have been a member (still am) of the German site chefkoch.de.  About five years ago, I became a fan of sourdough and was very successful with my own starter and creations.  I have posted about that on der-sauerteig.de.  However, my live has changed a lot over the years.  My kids have grown up, my wife and I have split after nearly 25 years and my interests have moved to new territories.  I'm still as interested in sourdough, but my occupation as a National Tour Guide for the Island of Ireland doesn't presently allow me to start a new starter, as I wouldn't be here at this time of year to look after it during its early days.  I've therefore switched to bread baking with yeast.  Even here i love baking with yeast ferment, which is very close to sourdough.

I've joined this community to share my baking experiences and I'm looking forward to "meeting" people here who share their experiences with the wider community.  The Tour Guiding Season is about to start and I won't be baking as much as I would like to until September/October, but I'm still interested and I will still visit and peak :-).  However, there will always be some time to bake in between tours and these experiences I will share with you.

All the best.  I'm looking forward to "meeting" you guys.

Wolfgang (presently in County Wicklow, Ireland)

Welcome Wolfgang.

Sorry to hear that such a long marriage has come apart; developing new interests helps one to deal with such a major change.

Your work sounds very interesting and I imagine you get to meet lots of interesting (and perhaps not so interesting) people.

Looking foward to reading about the breads you're able to bake in between all the touring.

Hello Lindy,

Thanks for your comment.  Well, I have to say that most people I meet are very interesting.  It is true that I meet a lot of people and I take my time for them and am genuinely interested in their stories, which they openly share with me.  It's interesting what kind of relationship forms after only a few days together.

I will hopefully get around to doing some baking between the tours. I'm dying to get back to my beloved sourdough.  I seem to have some problems with yeast breads.  Getting better, but by far not as good as sourdough.

All the best from sunny Ireland.

Wolfgang

Welcome to TFL.  Thanks for sharing and hope you can find time to join us and maybe picture some of your baking.  This is a fun place to learn and share your experiences with baking.  I was born in Belfast, Ireland way to many years ago..grew up in the US.

Hello Sylvia,

Many thanks for welcoming me to TFL.  I'm looking forward to sharing my baking experiences with you. I'm not doing too well with my yeast breads at the moment. I guess at heart I'm a sourdough person.  Saying that, the yeast baking is getting somewhat better. I'm mainly concentrating on Rye bread, (1 part rye, four parts white, self made bread spice).  This bread is quite nice, but not ready for the photo album yet.

Oh yeah, you're from Belfast :-).  A lovely city.  I'm doing a City Tour there at the end of May.  Have you been back there since you left?

All the Best

Wolfgang

Hi Christina,

Many Thanks for your hearty welcome :-) How did you know that I'm German?  I'm actually German/Irish (a bit of both), but could easily have been Austrian ;-).

Yeah, der-sauerteig.de is a great forum and I love reading my way through the site.

Where are you located?

Best Wishes,

Wolfgang

Wolfgang,

I was just posting on another thread that I think my brain is on holiday. I swear I read that you were from Germany and only lived in Ireland. Maybe my homesickness is taking over and I see Germans everywhere I go. I apologize for being so inattentive.

I live in Chicago but am from Munich.

Christina :-),

That's okay, I understand :-).  No need to apologize.

Greetings to Chicago from the Green Isle.
