Guinness cake

Paddyscake, here it is- you forgot to mention that it requires a room of its own. The 10" pan might have been a clue! Luckily it's terrific, so we'll have smiles as well as chocolate on our faces for quite a while. Tell your hubby I would've taken his advice but mocha didn't suit my color scheme this time- frankly I'm with you and prefer naked cake but my husband whines if there's no frosting.

just want to reiterate that this is Qahtan's recipe. YES..it is a very BIG cake!! I guess rule # 2 is the boys love frosting! Tell me, what did you use? I love the bunny silhoutte effect, chocolate on white. The cake freezes very well, but I'm not sure about the results with frosting.

Thanks, Paddyscake--it about killed me to cut up that bunny-- a third of the cake is presently living in the freezer and a slab went to a chocoholic where my husband works, so it's being well used. The frosting couldn't be simpler, I guess it's sort of a ganache, though I'm not fluent in pastry terms (buttercream I understand.) It's equal parts white or dark chocolate and butter, melted very gently then cooled til spreadable, just a few minutes in the fridge did it, and I added a hint of Bailey's Irish cream. EDH, it IS a presence, I'm sure you could easily halve it and make one 8 or 9" pan. What really got me was finding myself with this thick buttery dark batter to which I then added 4 oz. grated dark chocolate more- and the recipe says you could add 6! I was so sure it was going to end up this huge expensive underbaked brownie thing, but the crumb is like velvet. Paddyscake, thanks for doing the link- I would've if I knew how!

I can't wait to try this cake; I'm going to make it for my own birthday next week, if I can find a big enough pan to borrow (no kitchen stores within 2 hours). It looks dangerous!

I've frozen a number of cakes with different frostings, both buttercream type and ganache to great effect. I think 6 layer mocha cake with chocolate ganache between the layers tastes even better frozen (especially at about 10:00 at night...).

Thanks paddyscake and qahtan!

No party; I've given strict instructions that I'm to be left thoroughly alone! We're just going to take the day off from the grind and have fun. I do have reason to believe that I might become the owner of a set of scales as a result...

This site and it's focus have become a welcome replacement of my earlier obsession with chocolate; much easier on the waistline...

thanks again,

I don't frost mine, I like it served with a dollop of cold whipped cream on top.
