ABC Radio segment on the sourdough bread movement

Hi folks. ABC Rural Radio's 'Bush Telegraph' program has a regular segment called 'Food On Friday', and last year they broadcast a feature on sourdough bread. This included an interview with John Downes, the so-called "father of Australian sourdough", who is currently spreading the love in the UK.  I found the whole program compelling listening.

Because of the time that has elapsed, the segment is no longer archived on the ABC Rural Radio site, but a staff member kindly made it available to me on request. I have now embedded an MP3 recording of the segment in my recent blog post, so it can remain a publicly available resource. Thought people here might be interested in having a listen. If so, you'll find the MP3 at the following link:

Cheers Ross,

I met and interviewed John Downes on my blog a while back, wonderful person and full of knowledge.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Pleasure, Jeremy.

Could you pls post your blog link? I'm also a big fan of John Downes and would be most interested to read your interview report.

Just love encountering the sort of obsession and zeal for sourdough bread people like John demonstrate and more or less live their lives by. For those who have not come across John, click on the following link, which will open up a videoed conversation between he and St Kilda sourdough baker extraordinaire Daniel Chiroco.

In the interview John Downes says he can tell from the cover photo of Local Breads that Leader used some commercial yeast in making the loaves. Has anyone noticed a characteristic difference in the look of pure sourdough bread vs similarly handled breads containing commercial yeast?

Thanks for the link BTW - a very interesting interview.

Hi Ross,

He is a really genuine baker and human being, loads of knowledge and I would love to meet him if I get back to England, maybe do a stage if he'll have me?

The podcast link to your Downes interview wasn't working when I tried it - maybe just a tempoorary glitch. I'll try again later.

Cheers
